CCAP gets millions of hits each day

MADISON, Wis. — A public hearing for a bill that would limit online access to public court records in Wisconsin was held Thursday.

Assembly Bill 685 would remove felony case information from the court access website CCAP that gets millions of hits each day.

The bill was proposed after a defendant was found innocent.

Supporters think CCAP unfairly creates an online record. The said that court records would still be available for people interested in getting them.

“If you want information about arrest records you have to make that decision, you have to consciously say, ‘I do want that information,'” said Sheila Sullivan, with Legal Action of Wisconsin.

Some think the bill will complicate record keeping.

“What kind of organization wants to keep a double set of books, the books that are out for general consumption and the books in the back room?” Dane County Clerk of Courts Carlo Esqueda said.

The bill was introduced in the Assembly last week.
