Democratic bill changing access to popular online court database faces opposition

MADISON, Wis. — A Democratic sponsored bill that would restrict access to a popular online court records database faces opposition in the Legislature.

The proposal by Rep. Evan Goyke, of Milwaukee, is scheduled for a public hearing on Thursday. It is the latest version of a proposal to limit access to information in the court records database popularly known as CCAP.

The site gets millions of page views a day.

The bill would remove from public view any court case that did not lead to a finding of criminal guilt or civil liability. A separate database containing that information would be accessible to attorneys, police, journalists and some others.

The Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council and groups representing homeowners and landlords oppose the measure.
