Bret Bielema will be paying significantly more in property taxes after his home’s assessment was originally called into question by a neighbor.

Officials in the town of Dunn met Tuesday afternoon and determined the former football coach’s home was not properly assessed earlier this year at $809,000.

The town’s board of review changed the assessment to just over $1.3 million.

The town clerk said the 2013 property assessment did not include more than 2,000 square feet of finished space on the lower level of the home.

I’m recommending to the board the assessment be adjusted to $1.338, as opposed to the initial assessment, which was a conservative assessment that excluded the basement finish and excluded some other construction work,” town of Dunn assessor Dean Peters said.

Bielema is asking nearly $2.2 million for the 6,600-square-foot home.

The neighbor who complained said the town was giving tax revenues away in the process of assessing it so low.

Town officials said it’s not uncommon to have one or two of these types of assessment corrections every few years.
