Baseball team honors skyscraper-scaling raccoon with name change

The minor-league St. Paul Saints baseball team is temporarily becoming the St. Paul Raccoons on Tuesday night to honor the skyscraper-scaling raccoon who became an internet sensation earlier this month.
The Saints, who play their home games at CHS Field not far from UBS Plaza, the downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, building the young female raccoon scaled in early June, are known for their wacky promotions.
This particular one includes not only special St. Paul Raccoon jerseys for the team during its game against the Sioux City Explorers, but also a giveaway featuring special raccoon masks for the first 1,500 fans and a free bag of cat food for one lucky fan.
The cat food is in reference to the no-so-rare delicacy that helped lure the so-called #MPRRaccoon into a trap on top of the building so that it could be released into the wild.

“Should the raccoon ever return to the St. Paul area, she will have free run of the Saints ballpark, to rummage through the trash, climb up the St. Paul Clinic Batter’s Eye, or just hang out and relax,” the team said in a statement earlier this month.
