Barry Trotz resigns as Capitals coach
Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz has resigned less than two weeks after leading the team its first Stanley Cup.
The team announced the 55-year-old’s resignation Monday.
“After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I am officially announcing my resignation as Head Coach of the Washington Capitals,” Trotz said in a statement.
“We are obviously disappointed by Barry’s decision, but would like to thank Barry for all his efforts the past four years and for helping bring the Stanley Cup to Washington,” the team said in a statement. “Barry is a man of high character and integrity and we are grateful for his leadership and for all that he has done for our franchise.”

Trotz went into this past season with only one year left on his contract after general manager Brian MacLellan opted not to offer him a contract extension.
He led the Capitals to the playoffs in all four of his seasons with the team, including winning the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL team with the best record in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Trotz compiled a record of 205-89-34 with the Capitals. He previously coached the Nashville Predators for 15 seasons from 1998 through 2014.
