Baraboo girls raise money for teammate’s family

Prep Mania Game of the Week winter schedule released

Like a lot of teams, many girls on the Baraboo basketball team have played together since elementary school. They share a strong bond on and off the floor. On February 5th, that bond gets taken to a new level as the team hosts a “Shoot Down Cancer” benefit.

The fund raiser was organized by players on the team for a player on the team, Carlie Zimmerman, whose father Pat was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2014.

The money raised will go toward Pat Zimmerman’s treatment.

The move was a no-brainer for Carlie’s teammates.

“If you’re not there for each other off the court, you can’t trust each other on the court,” says Erica Pleau.

The benefit was organized by Pleau and fellow senior Isabel Schmelzer, who began planning soon after learning of Zimmerman’s diagnosis.

Their act of kindness will stick with Carlie for a lifetime.

“How do you thank someone for that? I’m gonna always look back on this and think ‘wow, there were a lot of people who really cared.'”
