Bank robbery causes lockdown at Madison high school, college campuses

A reported bank robbery at a west Madison bank put a west Madison college and high school on lockdown briefly Tuesday afternoon as police checked the area for a robber.

Madison College sent a WolfPack alert to its students at 3:24 p.m. advising students and staff to stay inside the building due to a bank robbery nearby the west campus on South Gammon Road.

Madison police said a man entered the Anchor Bank branch on South Westfield Road at about 3:05 p.m. He passed a note and fled with cash; no weapon was seen.

Madison Metropolitan School District spokeswoman Rachel Strauch-Nelson said Memorial High School was also locked down briefly Tuesday. School normally ends at 3:35 p.m., and students and staff were allowed to leave at 3:57 p.m. after police informed school officials it was safe. The school said the lockdown began about 3 p.m.

The Madison College lockdown was also lifted at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to an alert.
