Astros put Nationals on the ropes with World Series Game 5 win
The Houston Astros have taken the in lead the World Series with a third straight victory over the Washington Nationals, 7-1.
Houston has notched three consecutive definitive wins, all on the road, as they have come back from a 2-0 deficit against Washington to lead the series 3-2.
The Nationals suffered an early blow when scheduled starting pitcher Max Scherzer was unable to play due to an irritated nerve near his neck.
Washington’s emergency starter Joe Ross have up a pair of early home runs to rookie Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa, while Houston’s Garrit Cole gave up just three hits and a lone run to Juan Soto in seven innings.
Yuli Gurriel added two runs with a single in the eighth and George Springer capped the victory with a home run.
The series takes a day off Monday and returns to Houston on Tuesday, with Justin Verlander slated to start for the Astros and Stephen Strasburg for the Nationals.
