Bill would make it harder for courts to block state laws

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Assembly has passed a Republican-backed bill aimed at making it harder for courts to block state laws.

The proposal from Rep. David Craig would allow an attorney to stay a judge’s order blocking a state law by filing an appeal within 10 days. The stay would remain effective until an appellate court lifted it.

Craig’s proposal comes after Dane County judges struck down portions of Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s law stripping most public workers of their union rights and a voter photo identification law.

Democrats say Craig’s bill is an end-run around the legal system and tramples on the judicial process.

The measure passed on a 57-39 vote on Thursday. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
