Assault rifle, ‘significant’ ammo found at standoff suspect’s home
Man barricaded inside home shot multiple rounds, police say
MADISON, Wis. — Officers found multiple weapons and a significant amount of ammunition from the home of a west Madison man who was taken into custody Thurday after a brief standoff, police said.
Madison police officers responded to reports of shots fired during a domestic incident on the 1500 block of Frisch Road at 6:37 p.m., officials said. A man in his 50s was barricaded inside a home, and shot multiple rounds at responding officers from the house using a long gun.
Police spokesman Joel DeSpain provided photos of a Wisconsin State Patrol squad car that was struck with a bullet during the incident. Investigators also said a house was hit with gunfire. Among the guns seized was an assault rifle, which police said was fired multiple times in the direction of responding officers from a window.
The man came out of the house unarmed as the SWAT team was getting ready to make contact with him, DeSpain said. Police used the department’s armored rescue vehicle to prevent the man from moving into the neighborhood.
“From the ARV, officers were able to determine that the suspect was no longer armed,” DeSpain said.
He put his hands up, and officers were able to safely take him into custody around 8:15 p.m.
Officials said the man was inside the home by himself, and the woman who called police got out of the house.
Officials believe the man had taken a substance that caused him to not be in his right mind during the incident, DeSpain said.
“He had taken an overdose of medication and he was transported to a hospital,” DeSpain said Friday morning.
Dane County Emergency Management sent out a reverse 911 alert to residents in the area around 7:30 p.m. The 911 alert was canceled just before 8:30 p.m.
The alert told residents to remain inside a centrally-located room and away from windows. It also said to avoid the immediate area of the 1500 block of Frisch Road.
DeSpain said Friday morning that no one was injured.
