Fire pit ashes cause $25,000 in damage to home on Madison’s east side

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Fire Department says improperly discarded fire pit ashes ended up cause tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to an east side home over the weekend.
Fire crews were called to Dominion Drive just after 7 p.m. Saturday for the house fire. When they got on scene, a neighbor was already using a garden hose to try to put the fire out. Firefighters were able to finish putting the fire out, but not before $25,000 worth of damage was done to the home’s exterior.
The department’s investigation found the fire started with fire pit ashes that were dumped on top of a compost pile near the home.
No injuries were reported.
