Armed felon found on State Street in custody, police say

An armed felon found Friday night with a handgun on State Street is facing firearm and tentative drug charges, according to a police report.
Police said they took Xavier D. Davis, 19, of Madison into custody in the 600 block of State Street when a member of the department’s Gang Unit recognized the man as the subject of a warrant. Davis was uncooperative with officers, and some members of a gathering crowd yelled derogatory statements at police, according to authorities.
Police said the suspect was found with a loaded handgun in his shorts. He was arrested for possession of a firearm by a felon, possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession with intent to deliver marijuana, resisting/obstructing and on a warrant.
According to police, an officer suffered minor injuries while attempting to handcuff the Davis
Police said the arrest was part of a high-visibility and proactive patrol after a shooting two weeks ago.
