Armed burglar arrested after firing gun, running from police

A Madison man was arrested Friday afternoon after police say he broke into a Stoughton home, then led officers on a foot chase.

Stoughton police said they were called to the intersection of Page and McKinley streets at 2:18 p.m. on a report of an armed man who had fired a gun. Police found the man minutes later leaving a driveway near the intersection of Roy Avenue and Johnson Street.

Police said officers confronted the man, later identified as William A. Fleming, 35, who ran before being cornered nearby.

Fleming refused to comply with officers, and eventually had to be tased before being taken into custody, police said. Officers found a loaded Glock handgun and several items taken during a burglary on Roy Avenue on Fleming, police said.

Fleming, a convicted felon, is being held in the Dane County Jail on a probation hold, police said. He faces multiple charges, including burglary while armed, felon in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, endangering safety by use of dangerous weapon and unlawful firearm discharge near a dwelling, police said.
