Alma Thurlemann

Alma Thurlemann

Alma Thurlemann age 96, of Monroe, died on Monday, May 17, 2021 at the home of her caretaker and good friend, Carrie Raisbeck.

Alma was born on April 2, 1925 in Lauterbach, Germany, the daughter of Victor and Anna (King) Haberstroh. Alma was adventuresome as a young girl traveling to Switzerland to work as a maid and later to England to learn English. She wrote a letter to a catholic newspaper asking to meet a nice young man. Otto Thurlemann responded to the letter and the couple were united in marriage on May 9, 1964. They came to the United States in 1965 and settled in Monroe. Alma always enjoyed singing and playing the mandolin in Germany so she joined the Swiss Singers. She was also a member of St. Victor Catholic Church and was a proud Godmother to her brother, Oskar’s four children.

She is survived by a brother, Oskar; a sister, Agnes, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of Germany. She is also survived by her caregivers who treated Alma like their family, Carrie (Gary) Raisbeck of Browntown. Carrie’s niece, Dawsynn “Sassy” Doran, had a special bond with Alma and will also truly miss her.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto, on Feb. 12, 2015; her daughter, Jeannie Thurlemann; brother, Ludwig; and a sister, Pia.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, with Monsignor Larry Bakke officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.
