All City Swim Meet may cause traffic congestion on near west side

Weekend event may bring more than 6K people to Nakoma Road area

MADISON, Wis. — Swimmers from around the city will be diving into the Nakoma Country Club pool for the All City Swim Meet that starts Thursday, and officials say traffic may be a concern.

More than 1,900 swimmers and 4,000-5,000 spectators are expected to attend the summer tradition that’s now in its 53rd year.

Parking may be at a premium for the near west side meet, but traffic officers will be on hand to help with congestion and ensure the safety of swimmers and spectators.

On-street parking is suggested on Nakoma Road, Seminole Highway, Mandan Crescent, Manitou Way and Cherokee Drive, according to a release. Peak times for swimmer drop-offs will be from 7-8 a.m. and from 12-1 p.m.

Traffic changes in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday:

Iroquois Drive and Country Club Road will be closed to general public traffic and used exclusively for volunteer parking. Residents, resident guests and volunteers will need to show special permit passes to enter the restricted area.
Manitou Way will become a one-way street (heading north) from Seminole Highway to Nakoma Road and will serve as a swimmer drop-off area near the intersection of Country Club Road. There will be no parking allowed on the east side of Manitou Way from Iroquois Drive to Tumalo Trail. There will be limited one-side of the street parking on the west side of Manitou Way from Iroquois Drive to Tumalo Trail.
Tumalo Trail will be no general parking, except for limited one-side-of-the-street volunteer parking near the intersection of Manitou Way.
Mandan Crescent will be limited one-side-of-the-street-parking at the top of the curve (near Seminole Highway) as well as north of Tumalo Trail and around the circle.
