9 departments put out industrial fire on French Island

Firefighters from nine departments have put out an industrial fire on French Island.

The fire at River Steel burned creosote-soaked wood chips and creating a large cloud of smoke early Tuesday morning. The fire was still smoldering several hours later.

Authorities have lifted a request for residents around the fire in the Town of Campbell to stay in their homes.

WXOW-TV reports the fire apparently started in the railroad tie yard where wood chips from old railroad ties ignited. Heavy excavating equipment was being used to push the wood chips around so firefighters could attack the fire.

There are no reports of injuries.
