A west Madison child was nearly struck by gunfire as she watched TV in her home Monday night.

Police said the 6-year-old was in her apartment at about 8:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of Russett Road when a bullet came through a front bay window.

The round was among several shots that were fired outside the girl’s home, according to the report.

Police said it didn’t appear that her home was the intended target because as a witness saw a gunman firing at a moving car. The shooter had been in a parking lot where officers later recovered multiple shell casings.

Police said there were other children in the building that was hit, but no one was hurt.

According to the report, the girl’s mother told responding officers: “They could have shot my baby. Madison did not used to be like this and it just keeps getting worse.”
