3 things to know about the 2020 Girl Scout cookie season
MADISON, Wis. — For the next six weeks, you’ll see girls of all ages standing outside local grocery stores with something special in hand. It’s officially Girl Scout cookie-selling season!
Even though your cookies will cost and taste the same this year, the box they’re in will look a little different.
The Girl Scouts are using new branding, which talks about the “GIRL” of being a Girl Scout. The acronym stands for go-getters, innovators, risk takers, and leaders.
Badgerland scouts learn about these four principles through the programs they participate in year-round, which they pay for thanks to cookie sales.
$3, from the $4 customers pay per box, stays local and goes back to the council itself.
The other 25% goes to the bakery that makes the cookies.
You can buy cookies from your favorite Girl Scout online.
How times have changed! Although you’ll still see local troops standing outside area stores, Girl Scouts can now send family and friends across the country a special e-vite to their digital cookie store.
Cookies bought online still cost $4 and will be shipped to the customer’s door.
“We live in a digital age, right?” said Gibbs. “People don’t interact face-to-face. But the Girl Scout cookie program continues to teach girls how to be communicative.”
This is the last year for the beloved “Thanks-A-Lot” cookie.
The Girl Scouts have been selling the fudge-dipped shortbread cookie for 15 years. A new cookie will take its place in 2021.
“They are being replaced and it’s top secret,” said Gibbs. “We’re not sure what’s coming out, but it’s going to be awesome.”
Customers looking to stock up on “Thanks-A-Lot” cookies should know that most boxes include a “freeze by” date, indicating when to freeze them for maximum freshness.
Some troops are debuting a different “new” cookie this year, called “Lemon-Ups.” Badgerland Girl Scouts are not selling those, but lemon lovers can still enjoy Lemonades, which are very similar.
