17-year-old faces charges in June 5 crime spree, officials say
Grant County officials investigated vehicle thefts, crimes possibly connected to suspect
TOWN OF PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — A Gays Mills teen has been arrested and faces tentative charges after allegedly going on a crime spree in multiple counties, according to a release.
Donald J. Tweedy, 17, has been tentatively charged with two counts of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent for allegedly going on a crime spree with another person on the night of June 4, officials said.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office originally reported that a vehicle was stolen that might have been connected to other thefts in the area.
Around 10:30 a.m. on June 4 officials responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from a residence on Stumptown Road, officials said. The victim told police his truck was stolen.
On June 5, Grant County deputies were involved in attempting to locate a vehicle that was reported stolen from the village of Gays Mills, and was used in several attempted burglaries in the city of Dubuque, according to the release.
Deputies found the vehicle near Platteville and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle fled, officials said. The deputy stopped the pursuit once the vehicle entered Lafayette County.
A short time later the vehicle was seen heading back into Platteville on Highway 151, and ultimately the vehicle was abandoned by the two occupants in Platteville, according to the release. Officers spent several hours attempting to locate the occupants, but were unsuccessful.
Around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, a caller reported seeing two men matching the description of the occupants that fled the stolen vehicle in the area of Stumptown Road in the town of Platteville, officials said. Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate anyone.
Grant County officials said they believed the men who stole the truck from the residence on Stumpton Road are most likely the ones who abandoned the first stolen vehicle in Platteville.
Tweedy has also been tentatively charged with one count of attempting to flee or elude a traffic officer, and also faces additional charges in adjacent counties.
The struck stolen from Stumpton Road was found in the city of Dubuque and was returned to the owner, officials said.
