1 person dies in car fire under Interstate 90/94 bridge

One person is dead after crews responded to a fully-involved vehicle fire on Madison’s far east side Thursday night, according to a release.
Crews were sent to Femrite Drive under the Interstate 90 bridge just after 7:30 p.m.
Crews said heavy black smoke had filled the area under the bridge when they arrived.
Officials said a witness tried to assist the lone occupant of the vehicle after they saw it hit a bridge support pillar. The witness told police the vehicle burst into flames and engulfed the entire vehicle before they were able to help the driver.
According to a release, a bystander suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to a hospital.
Traffic on Femrite Drive was closed in both directions as crews investigated the incident.
Officials said there is no information available on the identity of the driver.
